RIPE Masterclass

Why become a LIR at RIPE?

RIPE ? LIR ? Réseaux IP Européens - Network Coordination Centre ? Local Internet Registry ?

If all this means nothing to you, it's time to take an interest in the subject.

Le RIPE-NCC
(European IP Networks - Network Coordination Centre)

is one of five global registrars, the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), in charge of Internet resource allocation, registration, and coordination activities for the promotion of the Internet worldwide.

Your presence on the Internet, and on an IXP in particular, is signalled to the networks of the other IXP connectors by your ASN (Autonomous System Number). This number is essential for setting up interconnections and BGP routing. Similarly, if you want to come to an IXP, you must have your own IP addresses.

As long as you don't have an ASN and your own IP addresses, you remain dependent on an access provider or host, which has these resources at its disposal.

But you can obtain an ASN and IP addresses from the RIPE-NCC by becoming a LIR.

If you want to peer, it's an obligation.

Becoming a Local Internet Registry with the RIPE-NCC is not difficult. You just need to follow a procedure and understand how the system works. This allows you to obtain one or more ASNs, blocks of IPv6 addresses and a limited number of IPv4 addresses (very limited indeed, and on a waiting list). Until a few years ago, this was done very quickly and was almost free. Now is the time to get started).

Being a LIR means having your own IP and ASN resources, allowing you to :

  • Becoming visible on the Internet ;
  • Become independent of one or more ISPs;
  • Entering the Internet ;
  • Contribute to the resilience of the network ;
  • Getting in with the big boys 😉

France-IX Association advises you

On the strength of our experience in IXP management and as a LIR, France-IX Association can advise and assist you in your dealings with the RIPE-NCC:

  • Analysis and validation of your needs;
  • Gathering the required information and documents ;
  • Registration and follow-up ;
  • Accompanying an ASN application;
  • Support for IPv6 and IPv4 address block requests.

This service is organised over 3 half-days.

An initial meeting will be held with our expert to give you an overview of the process and the environment in which it will be obtained, and to organise the collection of the necessary documents.

The second meeting allows you to make the application, fill in the forms and make sure you haven't forgotten anything.

The third session is used to retrieve the objects (ASN and IP) allocated so that they can be used.

And then...

Once you have your ASN, your IP addresses and an IXP port, you can start to peer with the other ASNs available on FranceIX.

Peering management requires knowledge of the fundamental elements of the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). France-IX Association invites you to take part in the BGP Workshop, a 2-day session enabling your network engineers to discover the entire protocol and practise configuring a BGP router by following the best practices of the profession.

  • This service is invoiced at €1,500 excluding VAT (for members).
  • This fee does not include RIPE-NCC registration and subscription costs.

For information, RIPE-NCC registration costs around €2,000 excluding VAT, for a LIR. There is an additional cost (around €50) per IPv4 or IPv6 assigned object or ASN).
